The Project

NEWS FLASH..............

Due to popular demand the wraps will now stay up until the end of August 2010.

A spin-off from WRAPPED 2010 is a project being put together to connect  community and Aged Care resident knitters and crocheters with students at Dunsborough Primary School so knitting and crochet skills can be passed down to the younger generations.  If you would like to be involved please leave a message under the Blog tab on this web site and someone will contact you.

and......one night recently six trees in Lyons Park, central Dunsborough had their wraps vandalised (with scissors, we think).  After a three hour emergency repair operation they have  been restored to their former beauty.

WHAT'S THE KNITTING AROUND DUNSBOROUGH ABOUT?

  • It's a community art project called wrappedindunsborough (WRAPPED)
  • It began in 2009
  • The 2010 project will run through July and possibly into August
  • It is envisaged WRAPPED will become an annual winter event
  • People from the Dunsborough, Broadwater(Cape Care Ray Village and Baptistcare Wm. Carey Court), and Perth communities knitted the wraps.  Many contributors to this project also knit regularly for charities

WHAT IS IT FOR?

  • The project brightens town, puts smiles on peoples' faces, is a lot of fun to create, brings people together, and creates possitive community experiences
  • It adds colour and soft texture to the built environment
  • It challenges knitting and crochet stereotypes and fosters knitting and crochet skills
  • It evokes memories
  • It is inclusive
WHERE IS IT?
  • Lyons Park, adjacent to the Post Office - trees
  • Foreshore end of Dunn Bay Road - sculptures
  • Naturaliste Forum - bollards
  • Dunsborough CentrePoint Shopping Centre - pillars
  • Naturaliste Community Centre - off Dunsborough Lakes Drive - posts
  • Police Station - trees
  • Caves Road between Commonage Road/Elmore Road roundabout and Dunsborough Lakes Drive/Seymour Blvd roundabout - trees.

WHAT'S HAPPENING NOW?

WRAPPED 2010 is going up in Dunsborough and we are down to the last half dozen of 292 squares!  Inclement weather slowed the team down but in between showers they are out there perched on ladders wrapping wooly brightness on trees, bollards, pillars, posts and sculpture.

TO EVERY KNITTER AND CROCHETER thank you so much for your gorgeous contributions - this project would be nothing without your creative works of knitting and crochet.  And THANK YOU to the people who braved the elements to wrap.....

To all the pedestrians and motorists who stopped to ask questions, take pictures or toot...... THANK YOU.....your inquisitiveness, curiosity, support and engagement is the icing on the cake.

If you would like to be involved in next years event, please register your interest under the Blog tab on this web site.

What happened last year.....
66 wraps, one length of finger knitting and 16 pom-poms were created by a group of wonderful people ranging in age from 8 to 87. The wraps were tied to trees, posts, poles and bollards in town by a team of 'knitting taggers' on October 2nd 2009 and left up for 10 days. We had lots of positive responses and much encouragement to do it again in 2010.
